Ma: designing with the space you leave empty
In Japanese, 間 (ma) is the interval - the pause between notes, the gap between stepping stones. It is not empty so much as charged. The space is doing work.
We treat layout the same way. A section that leaves its first four columns deliberately blank is not wasting room; it is giving the eye somewhere to rest and the content somewhere to land. Negative space is the loudest thing on a calm page.
It is tempting to fill every pixel - more features, more copy, more proof. Restraint is harder. But the calm you feel using good software is mostly the things we chose to leave out.
